A Wedding That Stopped Me in My Tracks

M & C at Newton White Mansion
I have been in events for a long time. Hundreds of them. And I still teared up,
It was the moment the bridal party danced into the traditional Nigerian ceremony. The music, the movement, the color, the way the room felt before the bride even arrived. The bridesmaids caught me: "Oh, there goes Mary again!" They weren't wrong. It happened several more times before the day was over.
That's the thing about a wedding like this one. When a couple brings their full selves to the day, both ceremonies, both cultures, every tradition honored completely, it doesn't just look beautiful. It feels like something.
M & C's wedding on May 30th at Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville, Maryland, was one of the most complex and meaningful events I have been part of. Here's what that day actually looked like, and why Newton White Mansion was exactly the right venue to hold it.
The Day
M & C celebrated with two ceremonies and approximately 240 guests across the full day.
The traditional Nigerian ceremony came first, with around 180 guests. The bride wore a stunning gele and traditional attire in gold, orange, and coral, and the ceremony space was transformed by the extraordinary team at Ispire Events into something that felt transportive. Full trees flanked a raised stage with wicker thrones, cascading orange and white florals, and rich green drapery. It didn't look like a ballroom. It looked like a rich and stunning universe.
After the traditional ceremony, guests moved to light refreshments while the team began the first of two simultaneous venue transformations.
Outside, the ceremony space was being finalized for the Western wedding: a sweeping white floral arch on the Newton White grounds, chairs arranged on the stone terrace and fountain, the rolling lawn as the backdrop.
Inside, the ballroom was being completely flipped. The same space that had held the thrones and the trees was cleared, re-draped, re-lit, and reset with white and gold: white velvet chairs, glass and velvet-draped tables, towering white florals, crystal. Two completely different rooms. Same four walls. Ninety minutes.
The Western ceremony followed outdoors, with the full guest count of 240. Then cocktail hour. Then the reception inside, in a room that gave no indication it had been anything else that day.
The food, handled by the brilliant Sandra Obinna of Ispire Events, was extraordinary. I will just say that and leave it there, because I need to remain professional and not divulge how much I ate! (My personal favorites: jollof rice, smoky Mac and Cheese, harvest salad, deviled eggs.)
Why Newton White Mansion Works for a Wedding Like This
Newton White Mansion is a Prince George's County property managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. It sits on a beautiful piece of land in Mitchellville, and it is genuinely one of the most underrated venues in the DMV.
Here's what I want couples to know about it: the things that don't show up on the venue page.
The full property is yours. When you book Newton White, you get the entire estate: indoors and outdoors. The grounds, the terraces, the gardens. That matters enormously for a multi-event day where you need different spaces to hold different moments.
Tables are included. This sounds small until you're pricing out a 240-person wedding and realizing how quickly rental costs add up. Newton White includes tables in the booking. That's real money back in your budget.
Chairs are available on-site. For an upcharge, but the convenience factor cannot be overstated. Not having to coordinate a separate rental delivery and pickup for chairs, especially on a complex production day, simplifies the logistics in ways couples don't always anticipate until they're in the thick of planning.
The getting-ready spaces are genuinely beautiful. The bridal suite, the library, the study: these are not afterthoughts. They are rooms with character, with natural light, with the kind of detail that makes getting-ready photos worth taking.
The staff know what they're doing. For large events especially, this matters. Newton White staffs properly for big days. The team is experienced, helpful, and present in the way a venue team needs to be when you have 240 people moving through a property.
Free parking. For a venue with this level of beauty and this much space, free on-site parking for a full guest count is genuinely rare in this market. If you're comparing venues and parking is a line item somewhere else, factor that in.
The ballroom has a skylight. That curved room with the floor-to-ceiling windows and the natural light overhead: it photographs beautifully and it gives the space an openness that a standard ballroom simply doesn't have.
What It Takes to Plan a Day Like This
A two-ceremony wedding with a guest count shift, two simultaneous venue flips, and a full traditional and Western production is not a day you can manage without serious logistics experience.
The outside ceremony space had to be built while 180 guests were inside for the traditional ceremony: quietly, on schedule, without disrupting the moment happening on the other side of the wall. The inside had to be completely transformed during a cocktail hour window, with vendors moving in perfect sequence, each team knowing their role and their timing.
My job that day was making sure every moving part moved on time, that M & C felt nothing but joy, and that their guests experienced a seamless, beautiful day from the first note of music to the last dance.
The planning, decor, and production that made it look the way it looked? That was Ispire Events and Lebarty Events. I am in awe of what they created.
